Much like Wolverine, Victor Creed was a victim of Canada's notorious "Weapon X" project, which sought to turn humans into weapons, either by amping their latent mutant abilities or by forcing mutations upon normal humans. Creed's "gift" from Weapon X was a healing factor, superhuman senses, and retractable claws. Now blessed with long life, his mind broken from the tortures of Weapon X, Creed became known as Sabretooth and he fell into Magneto's circle.
